About the troop
Welcome to Troop 72 - "Overlook Hills", Abington Pa. My name is Glenn Arizini, and I am proud to be Scoutmaster Boyscout Troop 72. We are a highly active troop, engaged in many different outings throughout the year including backpacking, camping (all seasons), hiking, gourmet cooking, fishing, skiing, spelunking (caving), whitewater rafting, Klondike Derbies, biking, orienteering, "Phinding Philadelphia", beach fun, parent-son weekend, and so many more activities. We traditionally attend a week long Boyscout Summer camp the second week of July. Each summer we also have a High Adventure summer outing to places like the Allagash River in Northern Maine, White Mountains of New Hampshire, Ohiopyle Western Pennsylvania, Adirondack Mts. in Northern New York, Cape Cod Mass., along with consideration to attend Philmont Scout Ranch (Cimarron NM), and Sea Base (Florida Keys, Fl). We are always doing something.
While we take our outings seriously, we also take rank advancement seriously. Working on advancement requirements is encouraged before & during meetings and on camping trips. We have Adult Mentors supporting every aspect of the troop. A few examples of positions are: Eagle Coordinator, Advancement Coordinator, Quartermaster, Fundraising, Troop Equipment, High Adventure, MB Counselors.
Most importantly, our Troop is about building leaders. Troop 72 is a “Boy-Led Troop”. What this means is that the Scouts run the troop. It’s that simple. Under the direction of the Senior Patrol Leader (the highest boy-held position in the troop), the Scouts plan the year, they schedule activities, they run the meetings, they train the new Scouts, they plan their own meals, and they cook their own food. Our Senior Patrol Leader is encouraged to complete the Youth Leadership training program held by the Cradle of Liberty Council, where he learns the skills necessary to lead the troop with the assistance of the Assistant SPLs and Patrol Leaders. The adult leaders – or Scouters as we call them – are there to provide support, offer advice if asked, drive, handle the money and record keeping, intervene for safety reasons, and other support and communication roles. But, if you ask a Scouter a question, chances are they will say, “Ask the Senior Patrol Leader.”
I encourage all Webelo & Arrow of Light Scouts to visit Boyscout Troop 72 and consider participating in some of our outings, such as our Scavenger Hunt weekend, Klondike Winter Campout, and troop meetings, such as our Halloween Costume Party, Chinese Auction, Swap Night, or any Court of Honor.
We meet every Monday night at 7:30 to 9:00 year-round at:
Roychester Community House,
2002 Parkview Avenue
Abington, PA 19001
